Pet System Overview
The Pet system in Ragnarok Online allows players to tame wild monsters and keep them as loyal companions. Pets follow your character around the map, adding personality and visual flair to your adventures. More importantly, pets that reach high intimacy levels provide stat bonuses to their owner, making them a meaningful part of your character's build.
Pets require care and feeding to maintain their intimacy. A neglected pet will lose loyalty and eventually run away, so treat your companion well.
How to Tame a Pet
To tame a monster and make it your pet, follow these steps:
- Obtain the correct Taming Item. Each tameable monster has a specific taming item associated with it. These items can be purchased from Pet NPCs, found as monster drops, or obtained through quests.
- Find the monster in the wild. The monster must be alive and on the map—you cannot tame a monster that is already dead or belongs to someone else's pet.
- Use the Taming Item. Double-click the taming item in your inventory, then click on the target monster. A taming attempt will be made.
- Success or failure. Taming has a success rate, typically around 20–30% depending on the monster. If it fails, the taming item is consumed and you must try again with another one.
- Pet Egg created. On success, the monster disappears from the map and a Pet Egg appears in your inventory. Use the Pet Egg to hatch and summon your new pet.
Managing Your Pet
- Hatching: Double-click the Pet Egg in your inventory to hatch and summon your pet.
- Returning: Open the Pet window (Alt+J) and click "Return to Egg" to store your pet safely.
- Renaming: You can rename your pet once through the Pet window.
- Feeding: When your pet becomes hungry (indicated in the Pet window), feed it its preferred food item.
- Accessory: Equip a pet accessory through the Pet window to change your pet's appearance.
Pet Intimacy
Every pet has an Intimacy value that ranges from 0 to 1000. Intimacy determines your pet's mood and whether it grants you stat bonuses. Managing intimacy is the core of the pet system.
Intimacy Levels
| Intimacy Range | Status | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| 0–100 | Awkward | No bonuses. Pet may leave if intimacy reaches 0. |
| 100–250 | Shy | No bonuses. Pet is warming up to you. |
| 250–750 | Neutral | No bonuses. Stable state for most pets. |
| 750–910 | Cordial | No bonuses yet, but getting close. |
| 910–1000 | Loyal | Pet grants stat bonuses! This is the goal. |
How Intimacy Changes
| Action | Effect on Intimacy |
|---|---|
| Feeding when hungry (correct timing) | Increases intimacy (+50 to +100) |
| Feeding when not hungry (overfeeding) | Decreases intimacy (-50) |
| Letting pet starve (very hungry for too long) | Decreases intimacy over time |
| Pet owner dies | Decreases intimacy (-20) |
| Performance/feeding at right time | Increases intimacy (small amount) |

Pet Accessories
Each pet species has a unique Pet Accessory that changes their visual appearance when equipped. Accessories are purely cosmetic—they do not provide any additional stat bonuses—but they are a fun way to customize your companion.
How to Get Pet Accessories
- Pet NPC Shops — Some pet accessories can be purchased from Pet Groomer NPCs found in major towns.
- Quest Rewards — Certain pet accessories are obtained through quests involving collecting specific items.
- Monster Drops — A few accessories drop from monsters, though this is rare.
To equip an accessory, open the Pet window (Alt+J) with your pet summoned, and place the accessory in the accessory slot. The pet's sprite will change to reflect the equipped accessory.
Homunculus System
The Homunculus is a special companion system exclusive to the Alchemist and Creator (Biochemist) classes. Unlike regular pets, Homunculi are powerful combat companions that fight alongside you, have their own skill trees, and level up independently.
How to Get a Homunculus
- You must be an Alchemist or Creator.
- Learn the skill Call Homunculus (requires Pharmacy skill).
- Obtain an Embryo. Embryos are crafted using the Pharmacy skill with the following materials:
- Morning Dew of Yggdrasil
- Glass Tube
- Seed of Life
- Use Call Homunculus with an Embryo in your inventory. A random Homunculus type will be created.
Homunculus Basics
- Your Homunculus has its own level, HP/SP, stats, and skills.
- It gains EXP from monsters you kill while it is summoned and fighting.
- You can control its behavior: Idle, Follow, Attack (passive or aggressive modes).
- The Homunculus has an Intimacy value similar to pets. Feed it regularly to keep intimacy high.
- Use the Feed Homunculus command when its hunger drops. Overfeeding and starving both reduce intimacy.
- At high enough intimacy and level, the Homunculus can evolve into a stronger form with new skills.
Homunculus Types
There are four types of Homunculus, each with a different combat role and skill set. Choose based on your playstyle and what you need most as an Alchemist/Creator.
| Homunculus | Role | Key Skills | Stat Focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lif | Support / Healer |
Healing Hands — Heals the Homunculus or its owner. Brain Surgery — Increases SP regeneration and max SP. Mental Change — Swaps MATK and max HP temporarily (evolved skill). |
INT, VIT |
| Amistr | Tank / Defense |
Castling — Swaps position with its owner (great for escaping danger). Adamantium Skin — Increases DEF and Max HP passively. Blood Lust — Increases ATK and adds lifesteal (evolved skill). |
VIT, DEF |
| Filir | Attacker / Speed |
Moonlight — Rapid multi-hit attack. Main damage skill. Flitting — Increases ASPD passively. S.B.R.44 — Powerful single-target attack using all remaining SP (evolved skill). |
ATK, AGI |
| Vanilmirth | Magic / Versatile |
Caprice — Casts a random elemental bolt spell (Fire, Cold, Lightning, Earth). Chaotic Blessings — Random effect: heals owner, heals enemy, or damages enemy. Self-Destruction — Massive damage AoE that kills the Homunculus (evolved skill). |
INT, Random |
Which Homunculus Should I Choose?
- Lif is best for solo play and survival. The healing support helps you sustain on tough maps without relying on potions as heavily.
- Amistr is excellent for tanking. Castling lets you swap positions to escape danger, and the high VIT/DEF makes it durable. Popular for WoE and MvP hunts.
- Filir is the best for raw damage. Moonlight hits multiple times and scales well with level. Great for farming and fast killing.
- Vanilmirth is unpredictable but fun. Caprice can deal massive elemental damage but the random elements make it inconsistent. Chaotic Blessings can heal enemies, which is a downside. Best for players who enjoy some chaos.
Homunculus Evolution
When your Homunculus reaches a high enough level and intimacy, it can evolve into a stronger form. Evolution changes the Homunculus's appearance and unlocks a new powerful skill unique to its type.
Evolution Requirements
| Requirement | Value |
|---|---|
| Homunculus Level | Level 99 or higher |
| Intimacy | Loyal (910+) |
| Item | Stone of Sage (used to trigger evolution) |
After evolving, the Homunculus keeps all its stats and skills but gains access to its evolved skill and a new appearance. The intimacy resets to a lower value after evolution, so you will need to build it back up.
Homunculus Tips
- Feed regularly. Just like pets, your Homunculus needs to be fed when hungry. Use the Feed Homunculus skill or command. Do not overfeed—only feed when the hunger indicator is low.
- Let it take hits. Your Homunculus gains intimacy from fighting and being in combat. Let it engage monsters (in a controlled manner) rather than keeping it on passive all the time.
- Manage its AI. Set your Homunculus to the appropriate behavior mode. Use passive mode in town and aggressive mode when farming. Some players use custom AI scripts for more precise control.
- Keep it alive. If your Homunculus dies, you lose intimacy. Use Resurrection Homunculus to revive it, and try to feed it or heal it before it goes down.
- Choose based on your playstyle. If you solo a lot, Lif or Amistr provide survivability. If you party often and want damage, Filir is the way to go.
- Stock up on Embryos. If you are unhappy with your Homunculus type, you can delete it and try again, but you will need another Embryo each time. Craft extras in advance.
