PvP Overview

Player versus Player (PvP) combat is a core part of Ragnarok Online. On BobaRO, there are multiple ways to test your build and skill against other players—from casual PvP arenas to organized guild warfare in the War of Emperium.

In Pre-Renewal, PvP balance revolves around gear, cards, consumables, and player skill. There are no Renewal damage formulas or third-class skills, meaning classic builds and strategies reign supreme. Understanding elemental advantages, status effects, and your class matchups is essential for success.

PvP Arenas

PvP arenas are free-for-all zones where any player can attack any other player. On BobaRO, PvP maps are accessible through the Warper NPC in major towns.

How PvP Arenas Work

  • When you enter a PvP map, you become attackable by all other players on the map.
  • There is no EXP loss on death in PvP arenas.
  • Items are not dropped on death in PvP arenas.
  • Healing items and skills work normally unless otherwise restricted.
  • There are no level restrictions—any player can enter.

PvP Map Types

Map Type Description
PvP Room Standard free-for-all arena. All skills allowed. Most popular for casual PvP.
PvP Nightmare Hardcore PvP. Players drop items on death. Enter at your own risk.
GvG Arena Guild versus Guild map. Only players in different guilds can attack each other. Great for guild practice.
PvP Preparation
Before entering PvP, make sure to stock up on potions (White Potions, Blue Potions, Condensed White Potions), status-resist gear (Marc Card for Freeze resist, Evil Druid Card for Stone Curse/Freeze immunity), and elemental armor swaps. A well-prepared player will outlast a stronger but unprepared one.

War of Emperium (WoE)

The War of Emperium (commonly called WoE) is Ragnarok Online's flagship guild-based PvP event. Guilds compete to capture and defend castles, gaining access to exclusive rewards including Guild Dungeons, treasure chests, and materials for crafting God Items.

What is WoE?

During WoE, castles across multiple cities become battlegrounds. The goal is simple: break into the castle's Emperium Room and destroy the Emperium crystal. The guild whose member lands the final hit on the Emperium claims ownership of the castle. Defending guilds must protect their Emperium from invaders until WoE ends.

WoE Schedule

Schedule Being Finalized
The WoE schedule is currently being finalized by the BobaRO team. Once confirmed, the days, times, and active castle rotations will be posted here and announced on Discord. WoE typically runs 1–2 times per week for 1–2 hours per session.

WoE Castles

In Pre-Renewal, WoE features castles in the following realms. Each realm has multiple castles (typically 5 per realm):

Realm City Castles Guild Dungeon
Valkyrie Realm (Kriemhild) Prontera Kriemhild 1–5 Prontera Guild Dungeon
Britoniah (Repherion) Geffen Repherion 1–5 Geffen Guild Dungeon
Greenwood Lake (Bauddha) Payon Bauddha 1–5 Payon Guild Dungeon
Luina (Arunafeltz) Al De Baran Luina 1–5 Al De Baran Guild Dungeon

Castle Ownership Benefits

  • Guild Dungeon Access — Only the owning guild can enter the associated Guild Dungeon, which contains valuable monsters and drops.
  • Treasure Chests — Treasure chests spawn daily inside the castle's Emperium Room. They contain zeny, rare items, and crafting materials.
  • God Item Materials — Specific castles produce materials needed to craft God Items (Mjolnir, Brisingamen, Megingjard, Sleipnir)—the most powerful equipment in Pre-Renewal RO.
  • Guild Prestige — Castle ownership is shown on the WoE Rankings.

During WoE

  • Teleport skills and Fly Wings are disabled inside castles.
  • EXP loss on death is reduced.
  • No item drops on death.
  • Only guild members can cooperate—non-guild players are hostile.
  • Your guild must have an emblem set to participate. Create one in the Guild window (Alt+G).

WoE Mechanics

The Emperium

The Emperium is a special object located in the deepest room of each castle. It has the following properties:

  • Very high DEF and MDEF.
  • Immune to most magic skills—only physical melee attacks deal significant damage.
  • Immune to critical hits (crits deal normal damage, not double).
  • Element: Holy. Use a Shadow or Undead element weapon for bonus damage.
  • It regenerates HP over time, so sustained damage is needed.
  • Skills like Sonic Blow, Bash, and Spiral Pierce are effective Emperium breakers.

Guardian Stones and Barricades

  • Guardian Stones — Two stones (South and North) protect the inner castle. They must be destroyed to open paths deeper into the castle. While intact, they also summon Guardian monsters that attack invaders.
  • Barricades — Physical barriers that block corridors. Must be destroyed to advance. They have high HP and are immune to magic.
  • Defenders can repair Guardian Stones and Barricades using the castle's Investment system.

Guild Skills

Skill User Effect
Emergency Call Guild Leader Teleports all online guild members to the leader's location. Essential for regrouping.
Recall Guild Leader Teleports a specific guild member to the leader.
Guild Approval Guild Leader Required to enable guild alliances and opposition.
Strengthen Guardians Passive Increases the stats of castle Guardian NPCs.
Regeneration Passive Increases HP/SP regeneration for guild members.

Restricted Skills in WoE

Certain skills are disabled or modified during WoE to maintain balance. Key restrictions in Pre-Renewal include:

Skill Status in WoE
Assumptio Disabled inside castle maps. Does not function during WoE.
Basilica Restricted. Cannot be used to block the Emperium room.
Ice Wall Limited. Reduced duration inside castles; cannot permanently block paths.
Teleport / Fly Wing Disabled. No teleportation inside castle maps.
Snap (Body Relocation) Disabled inside castles in most configurations.
Butterfly Wing Disabled inside castle maps.
Skill Restrictions May Vary
The exact list of restricted skills may be adjusted by the BobaRO team for balance purposes. Check the announcements on Discord for the most up-to-date list.

Battleground (BG)

The Battleground system is a queue-based PvP mode where players are automatically sorted into teams and compete in structured game modes. Unlike WoE, you do not need a guild to participate—anyone can join.

How to Join

  • Talk to the Battleground NPC in Prontera or other major towns.
  • Join the queue and wait for enough players to start a match.
  • You will be automatically teleported to the BG map when the match begins.
  • Teams are assigned randomly (or balanced by class composition, depending on configuration).

Battleground Modes

Mode Description Objective
Team Deathmatch Two teams fight to accumulate the most kills within a time limit. Get the most kills before time runs out.
Capture the Flag Steal the enemy team's flag and return it to your base. Capture the enemy flag the required number of times.
Domination Capture and hold control points on the map. Accumulate points by holding objectives.

BG Rewards

Winning (and participating in) BG matches earns Battleground Points. These can be exchanged at the BG Shop NPC for a variety of rewards:

  • BG Equipment — Unique weapons and armor only obtainable through BG.
  • Consumables — Potions, speed potions, and buff items.
  • Badges — Collect badges for higher-tier BG equipment.

Check the Item Database for a full list of available BG equipment and their stats. BG rankings are tracked on the Battleground Rankings page.

PvP Tips

Tips for PvP Success
  • Bring potions. White Potions, Condensed White Potions, Blue Potions, and Mastela Fruit are essential. You will burn through supplies quickly in PvP.
  • Learn your class counters. Every class has strengths and weaknesses. Know which classes you can fight and which to avoid. For example, Assassin Cross excels against low-VIT targets but struggles against high-VIT Paladins.
  • Use elemental advantages. Swap armor cards to counter enemy elements. A Swordfish Card (Water armor) makes you nearly immune to Water Bolt, while a Pasana Card (Fire armor) counters Meteor Storm.
  • Coordinate with your guild. In WoE and BG, teamwork is far more important than individual gear. Focus fire, peel for your supports, and communicate via voice chat.
  • Status effects are powerful. Stun, Freeze, Stone Curse, and Silence can turn the tide of a fight. Equip gear to inflict and resist them.
  • Practice your hotkeys. Fast switching between skills, items, and targets is crucial. Set up your hotkey bars before entering PvP.
  • Watch your weight. Being overweight slows HP/SP regeneration. Bring only what you need.
